When the Lights Come Back On

by Unknown Author

A Story of Faith, Football, and a Town Learning to Hope Again Mercy Creek, Texas is the kind of town where everybody knows your grandparents, Friday night football is practically a holiday, and the lights over Eagle Field can be seen from miles away. Population: 1,847. There is one grocery store, two churches that have been standing longer than anyone can remember, a Dairy Queen where half the town gathers after football games, and a high school whose football stadium seats nearly as many people as live inside the city limits. The Mercy Creek Eagles haven't won a district championship in nineteen years. But that has never stopped the town from believing. Until the night everything changes.

Author's Note

When the Lights Come Back On isn't ultimately about a football team winning games. It's about what happens when people discover that healing doesn't mean forgetting. Luke doesn't "get over" Caleb's death. He learns how to carry his friend's memory without allowing grief to destroy him. Mercy Creek doesn't return to what it was before the flood. It becomes something different. Something stronger. And Luke's Christian conversion isn't presented as suddenly making his life easy. Christ gives him something much more important: someone to hold onto when life doesn't make sense. The football field becomes the place where the town gathers, grieves, prays, serves, loses, celebrates and finally begins living again. Because sometimes the greatest victory isn't found beneath a scoreboard. Sometimes it's simply finding the courage to turn the lights back on.
